Chargeback Ratio Calculator

Enter the number of chargebacks you received and the number of transactions you processed in the same period. The calculator returns the ratio as a percentage and shows the arithmetic behind it.

Calculate your ratio

Count of chargebacks / disputes raised, not their value.

Count of settled card transactions for the same month or period.

Enter both numbers to see your chargeback ratio.

The formula

chargeback ratio % = (chargebacks ÷ transactions) × 100

This is the count-based ratio. Some programmes and providers instead measure the ratio by value (chargeback amount divided by processed amount), and some compare this month's chargebacks against last month's transactions. Those variants produce different numbers from the same business, so always confirm which definition a counterparty uses before comparing figures.

What the result does not tell you is whether a provider will accept it. Acceptable levels depend on the acquirer, the card scheme monitoring programme, your industry and your history — they are set in your agreement, not by this page.

How to read your ratio

A single month's ratio is a snapshot. Underwriters generally look at the trend across several consecutive months, the reasons behind the disputes, and what you changed after them. A ratio that rose once and then fell reads very differently from one that has climbed steadily.

Two practical points when you calculate this yourself: keep the numerator and denominator in the same period, and be explicit about whether you are counting disputes at first presentment or only those that became chargebacks. Mixing the two understates or overstates the figure you present.

For the background — how ratios are monitored, what evidence usually helps and what happens when a rate stays elevated — read the chargeback ratio guide. If your rate is already causing problems with a provider, the high chargeback rate page covers what is usually asked for next.

Your chargeback ratio is one input. The assessment reviews it alongside your industry, licence, markets, volume and processing history, then compares that profile against the providers we work with.
